Retail workers happy to talk shop
Friday 23 September 2005

A report from employee research firm ORC International has revealed that retail workers are the happiest in their jobs in comparison to all other sectors.

The data showed that 76 per cent of retail workers considered themselves satisfied in their jobs. The national average for this response to individual employment was 68 per cent.

Retail staff would also appear to benefit from the most encouraging form of direction, as almost three quarters were happy with their bosses' form of management and the amount of recognition that they receive.

The same amount of retail workers also asserted that they consider themselves to have job security and intend to work for the same company in the next year.

Glenys Laycock, group HR Director for Alpha Airports, commented: "We trade in a highly competitive market where retaining the best people, involving them, listening to their views and acting on them gives us a real competitive edge.

"When we've found that special sales consultant willing to start work at 4:30 a.m. and give tremendous service in a hectic environment where every customer has a plane to catch - quite simply, we want to hang on to them."
