SMEs making use of technology
Friday 03 February 2006

Mobile technology is enabling small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) to cut costs and raise productivity levels, new research suggests.

Mobile Data Association, an organisation promoting awareness of mobile data, said that companies were regularly sending and receiving mobile messages to provide information to customers about products and services.

Telephone interview research with business managers in a variety of different sectors also showed that 36 per cent were frequent message senders, each sending more than 21 messages every week, reports Unstrung.

Almost half of the businesses who participated in the survey said that mobile technology could provide cost and time saving benefits for their companies.

"We used to spend £1,500 a month on calls; this automated system has brought costs down to £200. The system has also saved a huge amount of admin time," an SME told Unsung.

Companies most likely to use business related mobile messaging tended to have between 11 and 50 employees. Fixed line, followed by mobile phone and email from PCs and laptops were the favoured forms of communication.
