D) Business Name
The business name is crucial and if properly thought out, can be very useful for advertising and promoting your business.
You can decide to trade under your own name(s), or you can have one that explains the nature of your business (Andy’s Flooring etc).
You could convey the image you are seeking by using fictitious names (Jackson, Sinclair & Churchill – Solicitors).
There are both advantages and disadvantages to using your own name in your business name. Do you want people connecting you with your business outside of work? Is it important for others to know of your success? Would your name help or hinder your business? Would you and your family prefer to remain ‘anonymous’?
If you use a name other than your own, you will have to include your name (and any partners’ names on all business correspondence).
A logo can be vitally important too as it will easily identify your business, and help to present the image you aim to portray. It will also help your company stand out in from the competition. In the same way, it might be worth considering a company uniform if that is appropriate.
You may want to protect your name/logo from being used by others, by registering it as yours. It also helps to check that your business name or company is not the same or similar to any others. (see www.companieshouse.gov.uk/info ) Also check to see that it does not conflict with any registered trade marks. (see www.patent.gov.uk)
Some clothing/equipment may be essential for health and safety reasons, and a suitable design/logo/name badge can advertise your business and help the loss of equipment and present a professional image.
