C: vi) Retail Premises

For Retail Premises, it is advisable to have an outline sketch (with the dimensions of the premises) to assist you in your planning.  Use it to note the position of doors, windows, pillars, as well as sockets and outlets on the list outlined below:

You will need to check on the following issues:

  • Will I need planning permission for a change of use?
  • Is it big enough for my requirements in the short and medium term? If so, is it a suitable, practical shape?
  • Does it have a pavement area that you can utilise?  Would this require additional planning permission?
  • Check on what time and where the sun shines. Would this cause problems? Is the access to the building large enough for your present and future requirements, and could it be easily modified?
  • Is the window display area suitable for your requirements? Could it be altered if needed?
  • Are there sufficient sockets/outlets/power capacity for your requirements in these areas?
  • Is there capacity to install extra outlets easily and at a low cost?
  • What is the age and condition of any wiring/installations?

Storage Area

Is it big enough for your present and future requirements, and is it sufficiently ventilated?
