C: vii) Warehouse Premises

For warehouse premises, it is advisable to have an outline sketch, and the dimensions of the premises, to assist you in your planning.

Here are some things to consider:

  • What is the floor area of the warehouse, and is the layout suitable for your purposes?  If not, could it be modified easily?
Does it already have an office area?  (An office within a warehouse can be created simply by buying a second hand portacabin).
  • Is there a secure storage area for valuables/personal items?  (This can be created by installing a second hand shipping container)
  • Are there toilet and washroom facilities?
  • Is their sufficient height for your storage shelving and room to add extra shelving?
  • Do you have the necessary height to operate access platforms or fork lift trucks?
  • Do any roof support beams/struts obstruct your working height?
  • Does the property have any floor mounted roof supports?  Are they wide enough apart to not hinder your working space?
  • What is the general condition of the building and roof?
  • How secure is the building? Does it have security such as fencing, exterior lights, CCTV, alarm?
  • Would the maintenance on the property (both internally and externally) be relatively easy to carry out?
  • Is there sufficient sockets/outlets/capacity for your requirements in these areas?
  • Is there capacity to install extra outlets easily and at a low cost?
  • What is the age and condition of any wiring/installations?
  • Is there adequate parking?  Would it be secure for any overnight parking?
  • Is there adequate space for vehicles to load, drop off and manoeuvre?
  • Are there any restrictions on access to the site?
